Professor Bin Yu, currently Dean at the Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, who did his Post doctorate in Neuroscience from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland gave a comprehensive presentation to the international students of School of Overseas Education on being a doctor in the UK and USA.
The professor commenced his lecture by introducing himself and by comparing work differences and similarities between the two countries. “Job security is one of the most important reason to work as a doctor in the west”, he said while stating several reasons to work in the west. He told the crowd of international students and teaching staff seated in front of him that medicine in the West is evidence based. Then he gave the students insight into the whole process of being a doctor in the UK and the USA, step by step respectively.
During his lecture he told the students about the PLAB exam that is taken for being a doctor in the UK, the introduction, registration process, steps, details of each step, average scores and the difficulty level. Then he proceeded to do the same for the USMLE exam which according to him and several other doctors throughout the world is recognized as being harder than PLAB and is taken for being a doctor in the USA. While presenting he discussed a few exam style questions with the students and interacted with them. The lecture was roughly two hours and was very informative and engaging. Many students felt inspired to study harder and give it a chance in the future. In the end of the lecture, he received a huge round of applause from the audience.
