As a medical student, one of the most valuable sessions I’ve attended was the class where our seniors shared their personal journeys through medical school and beyond. Their self-experience speeches offered not only academic tips but also life lessons that left a lasting impact on me and many of my peers. Listening to their honest reflections and practical advice has motivated me to better navigate the challenges of my own journey.
MSEKE ALICE ANTHONY, a third-year medical student, emphasized the importance of balancing academics with personal life. She shared how over the years she learned to manage time effectively, seek help when needed, and use active learning strategies. She also encouraged us to socialize, join clubs, and build a support system to make the academic load more manageable and enjoyable.

One of the most inspiring moments was hearing about her proudest academic achievements—winning a scholarship and placing second in a Chinese Calligraphy competition. Her story taught me that success often comes from believing in yourself and making consistent efforts.
RAJA MUHANMMAD ADEEL, a second-year student, focused more on disciplined study habits and using the right resources. His advice revolved around maintaining high academic standards, preparing early for exams like PLAB and USMLE, and using digital platforms to reinforce learning.

He laid out a structured routine—take notes, revise, test yourself, and stay consistent. His emphasis on self-discipline (avoiding oversleeping, being punctual, creating schedules) reminded me that small daily habits can shape long-term success.
BASSEY EMMANUEL ETIM, now an intern doctor from the 2019 batch, brought a more clinical perspective. He explained the critical role of internship in shaping a future doctor. Through real-life patient interactions, he learned how theoretical knowledge is applied practically, which helped him pass his licensing exam and prepared him for hospital life.

His tips were practical: always be punctual, wear your white coat, carry essential tools like a stethoscope, and make an effort to overcome language barriers—especially in a diverse medical environment. His positive attitude and willingness to learn from experienced doctors despite challenges were deeply motivating.
Hearing from seniors who have walked the path I’m currently on gave me clarity, confidence, and motivation. Their stories were not just about success, but about perseverance, discipline, adaptability, and the willingness to keep learning.
This session reminded me that while medical school is demanding, it is also full of opportunities—for growth, for discovery, and for becoming not just a good student, but a compassionate future doctor. I now feel better prepared to make the most of my time here and face challenges with a stronger mindset.
The session with senior students offered a wealth of insights, not only into surviving medical school but thriving in it. Their experiences reminded everyone that making mistakes is part of the learning process and that support, discipline, and a balanced lifestyle are crucial for success. These speeches left a lasting impact, encouraging students to make the most of their time at GMU.
